Importance of infrastructure

A good infrastructure is important for economic development of any country, specially in the case of India which is like island, as it is surrounded by water, himalayas and hostile nations, which doesn't allow transit of goods. For this purpose India should maintain strong navy to protect its maritime interests. New seaports should be built and existing seaports need to be modernized, so that they can handle more unloading/loading of cargo per hour. We should improve and lay new roads and rail links connecting entire country extensively, this would improve & promote trade & commerce and attracts FDIs. This would assist growth of various sectors and provides mobilization of army & better management of supplies to border areas, and also reduces reaction/deployment time, it should be noted that at the time of 1962 war, every small need of the army has to be airlifted to the frontlines and in some events air dropped food & other things had landed in the enemy territory and depriving our army from those essentials, where as Chinese has laid extensive roads and rail links for sending supplies and reinforcements. This is very important with regards to our north eastern states for having poor communication and transportation links with rest of India.

Golden quadrilateral project is a good step but still lot needs to be invested in development of basic infrastructure.

Shuurro nice to c ur concern over the state of infrastructure ... but then it is fine to say we shud do this we shud do dat .. i mean build roads .. ports .. airports ... n wat not ... i think this is the most commonly used statement of any statement ... the devil lies in how to do it actually .. where do u get the funds from .. how to implement it even if u have the resources ... we have been struggling in this front ... first resourece requirement is enormous secondly delivery mechanism is absent ... so all that u say makes complete sense to everyone .. but then how to dot ... if u have any suggestion on this issue .. do let me know .. cheers aski

Hi Abhishek, I had a discussion with my friend on importance of infrastructure and with this context i had blogged to bring awareness, therefore i had only concentrated on the subject, as title of blog suggests. Questions which you have raised are very important and are also commonly asked on every big project, for example same thing has been said about Golden Quadrilateral project (5851 kms), though it is still not complete and facing some problems, we can see result of this vision in many states. India is big country so there wont be a problem of funds, specially when state is willing to implement social welfare schemes as rural job guarantee scheme, which costs around Rs 50,000 crores annually(almost 2 percent of GDP). We could raise required money through bank loans, allowing FDIs in this area, on bonds and companies can invest their finance and later get back their returns through revenue generated through toll fee. Main problems we would face is corruption, quality of work, acquiring land and missing deadlines & increasing cost, i'm sure with commitment from the government & with transparent approach we can overcome this. We may not eliminate corruption completely but we can reduce it and improve quality of work by making project incharge accountable & contractors of work and giving them incentives for quality & meeting deadlines.

Instead of investing in risky gas pipe line project from iran(we need to depend of regime in iran and pakistanis would get more leverage against us and moreover they could not safe guard their own pipe line, so their is no absolute guarantee for security), i prefer development of ports and their modernization and it would help other sectors too and also diversify our energy needs(this one was initially proposed by acron).
