Can we learn from South Africans?

"Indian cricket team lacks discipline & attitude" this remark is not made by Rahul Dravid with regards to number of extras conceded in the Hyderabad game against South Africa but the observation made by people who are responsible for the team's arrangements. To these people, It took just few days to unearthed deeper malaise in the Indian team. These are the reasons for above deduction, which were reported in Thursday's issue of Deccan.com

  • South African team had regular meetings between 6pm and 7pm. Indian team members went to attend their respective sponsor programs.

  • South Africans moved together and ate together but Indian players sat in groups, while having their food. On the match-eve, South Africans had an exclusive team only dinner on the lawns and paid bill themselves.

  • South Africans went to bed by 9pm on all days, despite being accompanied by their wifes and girl friends on this tour.

In Friday's newspaper it was reported, that Indians, on reaching Bangalore most of them preferred to take rest and just two players ventured out for practice. All these symptoms show indolent attitude and lack of cohesiveness in their approach. For a team which has been embroiled in controversies, group politics and personal loyalties, it is difficult to overcome them in a night but they should make a beginning, first they need to realize importance of small gestures in nurturing team spirit & discipline, specially when our players come from diverse regions.

No matter who wins this series, Indian players need to learn lot from South Africans. Meticulous routines, team work and devotion towards the game will only bring us close to realizing the world cup dream and not individual talent or fame.

I would advice restraint to you. Are you sure that the sources you quoted are to be believed. I mean this is the same press who went ga ga abt our team's discipline when we beat Sri Lanka. It is difficult to digest a defeat, but we have to remmember that one of the two teams have to loose. I dont see the point in comparing what the SA team did with what the Indian team did. I guess the same situation would be valid when Indians tour SA. Just because they are in a foreign land.

You are right, learning good things is wright. our team should leave stress and be cool, it is the best training.

Well, you can advise anything to anyone but there should be merit in it for someone to heed to you. First, these remarks were passed by people, who are not involved with analyzing performance of Indian team and they don't come with certain mind set & baggage, therefore these observations become important. They only point out professionalism of south africans and they don't lament about Indian loss, of-course these observations were used by press to point out something else in the newspaper, which is not the issue i raised here. As i said in my blog, i was talking about the team which we are going to prepare for the world cup and not about particular series.

Well, none said that we need to do same as SA but their actions speaks volumes about commitment and discipline they got and sure, they do teach us how to be a team which can win 20 consecutive matches. We have deeper malaise which are evident from our past & present actions, what can we make of this:

When entire visitor's team go out for practice and only two aspiring youngsters from a home team go out for practice in the noon, while rest of the team takes a break.
When last time we visited foreign country, our team forms into groups and one group goes to Victoria falls in Harare tour for sightseeing and rest of the people go for next venue.
Visitor's spend most of the time in practice, even though their wifes and gfs enjoy sightseeing & shopping in Hyderabad. To contrary, some of our team members are busy with sponsor programs in the middle of the series.

Honest criticism is always hard to digest.
